Almonds - Healthy for Your Heart and Weight

Almonds make a great snack and are considered to be one of the healthiest nuts for men and women. They are full of calcium and vitamin E. In addition, they contain good amounts of potassium and magnesium, excellent for regulating heartbeat and Vitamin B17, a vitamin that is becoming known as the “anti-cancer” nutrient.

Almonds are considered to be “heart healthy” because of the phytochemicals beta-sisterol stigmasterol and campesterol. Both are thought to contribute to a healthy heart while the healthy fats found in almonds help lower bad cholesterol by as much as ten percent, thanks to their high monounsaturated fat content.

Studies, such as the Nurses’ Health Study and the Physicians’ Follow-up Study, found that those who ate more nuts during dieting lost more weight. This may be because they are high in protein while being high in healthy fats, which actually helps your body shed bad fat.

And lastly, almonds are anti-inflammatory. They are alkalizing to the body and assist the liver with elimination of wastes. It is interesting to note that Anne Louis Gittleman, in her somewhat controversial book, the Fat Flush Plan, also says that eating foods high in healthy proteins and fats allow the liver to strengthen and cleanse, allowing the body to flush fats more easily.
