#14 - Chemicals and Pollutants in our Bodies

I often am asked by clients if the body really does contain toxic chemicals - and if so is it really in harmful amounts. To shed some light and put this in perspective, I have come across some information I'd like to share with you.

A study by the Environmental Working Group and Commonweal (a non-profit Health & Environmental Research group), found industrial chemicals and pollutants in umbilical cord blood from 10 babies born in 2004 in U.S. hospitals. The blood was collected by the Red Cross after the cord was cut, and found to have pesticides, wastes from gasoline, burnt coal, burnt garbage, and consumer product ingredients. The parents were not known to work in the chemical industry or were not known to have problems from any chemical exposure.

Researchers detected a total of 287 chemicals in the 10 samples. These include the Teflon chemical PFOA and perfluorochemicals used as stain and oil repellants in fast-food packaging, clothing and textiles. In addition,180 of these chemicals cause cancer in humans or animals, 217 are toxic to the brain and nervous system and 208 cause birth defects.

My first reaction is: no wonder our children are stricken with ADD, ADHD, behavioral disorders, allergies, autism and cancer. More reason to teach our children about health and good nutrition.

Also, with a start like this, I think it's safe to say most of our bodies could use help with the cleansing and detoxification processes.
