#26 - 4 Tips to Protect Your Heart
We all know there are bad foods that can contribute to heart disease. But there are also foods that help your heart stay strong and healthy. Taking care of your heart can be a daily ritual by following some simple tips. First, let’s learn a little about the dangerous fats that can kill; triglycerides.
Triglycerides are a necessary fat that we all have and need. It is used by our bodies as a steady source of energy for muscles. However, as with anything, too much of a good thing can be hazardous to your health.
In fact, high levels of triglycerides can double your chances for heart disease even if cholesterol levels are normal! Here are some daily dosages to help you keep your body balanced and triglycerides under control:
- Flavonoids found in apples and grapes, as well as coumaric acid in berries and citrus slow the production of triglycerides in fat cells. Eating these foods on a daily basis can help lower levels by up to 83%.
- Omega 3’s found in fish oils cut triglycerides by 40% if eaten daily. If you don’t want to eat fish 7 days a week, try an Omega 3 supplement of 2g to 4 g daily. They are healing for the liver and have an anti-aging effect on your arteries, as well.
- Take ½ teaspoon of cinnamon daily. This spice is rich in antioxidants and helps your muscles use and absorb blood sugar before it can be converted into triglycerides.
- Here’s a real treat for your heart. Eating dark chocolate raises your levels of nitric oxide which helps relax your blood vessels, which in turn helps lower blood pressure.
