Can You Protect Yourself From the Superbug, Bird Flu and Swine Flu?

Yes - You Can!

The news is covered with reports about the swine flu. Last year we had to worry about the avian flu. In recent years, a superbug was announced. It was being reported that deaths tied to infections from it could surpass those caused by AIDS. It is a drug-resistant staph "superbug" that has been able to mutate against penicillin-related antibiotics due to overuse.

Because of all these strange and powerful pathogens, health officials are now reluctant to use other types of drugs. They are realizing that overuse could cause the "super germ" to become resistant to those as well. I say - it's about time.

This is yet another example of the medical community, or the CDC or any health officials not advising us to keep our immune systems strong. They tell you to avoid the swine flu, or any virus by washing your hands, avoid shaking hands, avoid public places, and getting a toxic flu shot; anything except the most important, get your body strong.

Here's a fact: Those with compromised or weaker immune systems are more susceptible to these diseases. At the same time, you have the power to strengthen your immune system.

Here are some ways to be proactive at home to protect yourself from the swine flu or any superbug in addition to washing your hands and being careful:

  • Eat healthy foods. This includes plenty of organic fruits and veggies and less junk foods. For those who don't know yet, there is a strong link between your digestion and your immune system. Your digestive tract is an active immune center where good bacteria fight the bad and where 80% of your cells that make antibodies reside.

  • Eat less junk foods - especially when sick. This includes foods that contain white sugar and high fructose corn syrup. These foods actually weaken your immune system while sugary foods can knock it out completely for a period of time.

  • Take the herbs echinacea and goldenseal for about a week if you feel start to feel under the weather or if you just want extra protection. These have been shown to increase the function of your immune system by up to 60%. This immune function is what your body needs to fight not only the swine flu, but any pathogen that may harm you.

  • Use essential oil of lemon to help strengthen the immune system and assist in killing the bad guys. Dilute the lemon oil in olive oil, almond or coconut oil. Lemon oil has been shown (Dr. Jean Valnet, MD) to kill meningococcus bacteria, typhoid bacilli, staphylococcus aureus and pneumococcus bacteria.

  • Use essential oil of lavender. Dilute it with coconut, olive or almond oil and apply to your neck, spine or bottom of your feet. Add it to your bath. It has been shown to kill bacteria and strengthen the immune system. (Essential Oils Desk Reference, 3rd Ed.)

The medical community will not advocate the above as viable protection. They claim the flu shot is where its at but everything else is only complementary.

Why Didn't My Doctor Tell Me There is More That I Can Do to Protect Myself and My Family?

My guess is because allopathic (Western) doctors are trained in physiology and how to use dangerous and toxic chemicals (pharmaceuticals) and surgery to combat disease. None of the above are drugs or surgery and medical doctors have no training in these areas aside from one semester of basic nutrition. Therefore they say not only are the above complementary, but the use of holistic health can be harmful!

However, eating healthy can never be a bad thing. Herbs are condensed nutrition. Anyone who questions the safety of herbs should instead question the safety of the pharmaceuticals they are taking. Herbs can affect how medications act in the body, just as certain foods can. This is because meds are strong and dangerous and must constantly be monitored in order to use them safely. Any changes in the body, for better or worse, will affect how your body reacts to the medications.

You can also compare the amount of people that died last year from herbs (0) to those who died from pharmaceuticals (106,000 is the latest stat I can find - straight from the American Medical Association's own Journal of the American Medical Association, JAMA 98;279(15):1200-5).

So when you hear the dangers of herbs - find out who's calling the kettle black. ;) Your body is powerful and can be stronger than you know. Nutrition, herbs and bodywork are not meant to replace drugs. They all help your body to become stronger on it's own to fight the swine flu - or any virus.
