Cleansing Update

A surprise update from the federal government's "President's Cancer Panel," a panel put together by the government to help in the fight against cancer. The report, issued in early August, called on the food industry to "cease being a purveyor of unhealthy foods."

Members include the American Cancer Society's Chief Executive Officer and an officer of the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. In their report (you can view it on-line at http://pcp.cancer.gov) they urged the administration to use the power of their office and it's moral obligation to protect Americans by changing legislation that now makes healthful food more expensive and less available and in turn subsidizes junk foods.

The panel said in their report that "we heavily subsidize the growth of food that in their processed forms... are known contributors to obesity and associated chronic diseases, including cancer." Fresh vegetables and fruits are not subsidized the same way.

This report shows that we have an uphill battle when it comes to our health. We are bombarded with junk foods, processed foods and are forced to pay more for healthy, organic foods. When it comes to health foods or supplements, regulations stymie any efforts to inform the public of the health benefits.

I believe this is proof that it is in our best interest to cleanse our bodies. We are bombarded not only with environmental pollutants, but toxic chemicals used in processing of many "staples" of our diet.

The American Cancer Society predicts that over half a million people in the United States will die of cancer in 2007. Empower yourself with knowledge so you don't become a statistic.

Let Food be Your Medicine

Dates are packed full of minerals including iron, manganese, magnesium, calcium, copper, sulpher and potassium. Because of the high mineral and oil content, they have been considered one of nature's perfect foods.

They are full of fiber and here's something you might not know... they contain a natural aspirin. Research has shown dates have been useful in preventing diseases of the respiratory system and preventing abdominal cancer.

They have been traditionally used as a remedy to strengthen a weak heart, to stimulate and strengthen muscles and for children with hyperactivity. The high mineral content may be responsible for these benefits.

Take Your Fats!

Including your Essential Fatty Acids into your program for the many health benefits. These include supple skin, balanced hormones, healthy hair, and healthy brain function. Also, following a cleansing diet for more than a few days can be tough. Adding a liquid EFA supplement to your morning juice will help you to feel full and satisfied. You can even take this combo two or three times during the day if you need help throughout the day. The health benefits are worth it!

Featured Recipe

Date Treats - Although not normally part of a cleansing regimen, I included these this issue in tribute to dates being the Food Medicine for this issue. I have used this recipe in the early stages of my cleanse to satisfy my immense sweet tooth. There is no refined sugar, and no processed foods in it.

Later on I started using this recipe to make treats for my children as an alternative to traditional cookies. These date treats are very high in protein, vitamins, minerals and healthy fats - excellent for children's growth and good for our nutrient count, as well. Watch out if you're trying to lose weight, however. The calorie count is also high...

Blend together in a food processor:

1/2 pound of fresh, raw, pitted, Dates 1 cup of fresh, raw, organic Almonds 1/2 cup of fresh Coconut 2 Tablespoons of water A small spoon (or squeeze) of honey to make it sticky and hold together if needed.

Process all the ingredients without the honey until it forms a paste. Check to see if you can make a ball that will hold together. If needed, add the honey and process again.

Form balls. Roll these in either real cocoa/stevia combination, or in fresh coconut. Set the balls on wax paper on a plate and refrigerate for at least an hour.

I need coffee in the morning to stimulate my first b.m. Is it okay to do this while cleansing?

Having a small cup of organic coffee with stevia and only a splash of milk probably won't interfere if you're following the rest of the program closely - such as eating healthy and taking your supplements on a regular basis.

However, it is best to take a break from this stimulant for a while. The body likes change - and change ensures that no allergies or food sensitivities are created.

The bottom line - strive to cut it out for three or four weeks. Your body will be happier and look at it this way - it's something to look forward to when your cleanse is over.

If you do stop coffee completely, start by sipping only a small amount when you do drink it again. Your body will be cleaner therefore more sensitive to the caffeine. If it's decaffeinated, more chemicals were used in the processing and your body will feel that, too.
