Cleansing Update

In the Los Angeles Daily News this month, a question was asked in the health section about cleansing. Surprisingly, the answer given was a positive one. And an often overlooked fact of some cleansing programs was also pointed out.

The article mentioned that fasting and extreme diets can cause muscle loss, which is true. This is something to consider before deciding which cleansing program you want to follow.

Be sure to prepare your body first by changing your eating habits in stages. Be sure to get protein three to four times a day.

If you eat meat, you can have fish, chicken or lean, organic beef. Eat only the size of your palm. After a few days, exchange one animal protein for a vegetable protein such as legumes (see the lentil recipe below), sprouts or a green superfood. After a few more days, exchange another meal and stay with this process until you cut out meat. There are many foods that are packed with usable and complete protein that are vegetarian.

Abstaining from animal protein gives your digestion a rest and helps your body cleanse. You can do this temporarily or use this method to eat vegetarian if that is your preference.

Fasting for a cleanse doesn't have to mean consuming only water or juice. In the Springclean 7 Day Cleanse, which is a fast, green superfood is taken so the body can have nutrition that includes protein. I believe the added nutrition helps the body have the strength it needs to cleanse.

Let Food be Your Medicine

Lentils are an excellent source of protein while at the same time contain virtually no fat. They are also packed with fiber and minerals which lowers risk of heart disease. Lentils contain large amounts of magnesium which improves the flow of blood, oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. They also help to stabilize blood sugar.

Diet & Motivation Tips

Eat a fresh, raw green salad before lunch and dinner every day. Eat is slowly before you start the rest of your meal. This will get your digestion started and ready to break down the rest of the food of your meal. It will also help to lessen the chance of over-eating. Remember to chew it completely so your body can use all the fiber, extract all the nutrients and stimulate your enzymes.

Featured Recipe

Warm Curried Lentils
Chop garlic, onion, carrots, celery and kale. Lightly sautee in vegetable broth. Add curry powder, salt and pepper. Set these aside.

Rinse lentils. Put lentils, a can of undrained, fresh, organic, chopped organic tomatoes in a pan. Add vegetable broth to cover if needed. Bring to a boil and then reduce heat and simmer uncovered until tender - about 30 minutes. Add the lightly sauteed veggies. Add cilantro, salt and pepper to taste.

Ask A Question

I get very tired while cleansing. How can I alleviate this?
Getting your blood circulating helps stimulate energy by transporting more oxygen throughout your body. Try stretching and/or brisk walking. Stretching squeezes blood into the small capillaries throughout your body. While walking, focus on proper form to pump your calf muscles which also stimulates circulation.
