Fresh Lake Trout - Another Fish Alternative

I'm writing about the health benefits of this fish for my husband. We live in a resort community where lake fishing is very popular. Many people that live here are into outdoor recreation and therefore eating healthy to support that type of lifestyle. You'll see many people at the lake fishing - not for sport, but for dinner. So - I've decided to explore one of the fish that aren't normally discussed in the health food circle.

The first, and probably the most obvious benefit, is the amount of Omega-3's in fresh lake trout. Eating Omega 3 Fatty Acids have been proven consistently to reduce the risk of heart disease by as much as 40 percent! Fresh-water fish are found to be an excellent source of this nutrient. It is interesting to note that one study found the trout of Lake Superior to be higher in Omega 3's than even Chinook Salmon!

On the other hand, a deficiency of Omega 3's is associated with mental illness and depression. Omega 3's are necessary for brain development and continuing brain function.

Lake trout is also an excellent source of Omega 6 Fatty Acid and monounsaturated oils. These are necessary to help reduce lipoproteins, which help prevent heart disease and atherosclerosis. In addition, trout is a rich source of niacin, potassium, phosphorus, B6 and B12.

As with any foods, grilling, baking or broiling is healthier than breading and/or frying your fish. Keep it healthy and clean and your heart will thank you.
