Cleansing Foods - Fruits

Fruits are natural cleansing foods for the body. They are full of fresh water that is high in vitamins, minerals, enzymes, antioxidants and trace elements. When you choose body cleansing foods, fruits are a natural addition.

Fruit fiber slows the absorption of the fruit sugar into your bloodstream during digestion. In fact, fruits have a lower glycemic index than  white sugar, white flour and even whole wheat and similar or less glycemic loads of average whole grain bread products (fruit average glycemic load of 6 whole wheat breads have an average glycemic load of 11 according to Harvard Health Publishing).

The first stage of digestion takes place in the mouth. You body can transform up to half of the starch from breads into sugar before it even enters your stomach. This can be taxing on the digestion and blood sugar levels. Because of the natural fiber, fruits are a healthier choice.

While cleansing, it is best to choose cleansing foods (such as fruit) that are easier for your body to digest. The less your body has to work at digestion, the more your body will cleanse and eliminate old waste.

Fruits are full of enzymes and require less digestion from you. They can be broken down in your system while giving other organs, especially the pancreas, a needed rest. However your digestion is still working, so your metabolism keeps active – an excellent enhancement to your body or colon cleanse.

Adding fruits in the morning are a good way to enhance your body’s natural cleansing process, as this is the time your body is normally attempting to cleanse itself. However, you may choose to have only fruits for a few days out of your cleanse. This could be very beneficial to your digestion. But there are two drawbacks.

It requires more effort and discipline to eat fruit and nothing else. Fruits are very light and digest quickly so your stomach may rumble more than a regular cleanse or fast. In addition, during a cleanse you eat other cleansing foods besides fruit, that keep your body and taste buds more satisfied. But if you can do it, the results of cleansing and energy may be well worth it.

Cleansing Foods - Fruits for Cleansing

  • Melons – These are very alkaline. This helps to balance the system if one has eaten meats, beans or wheat on a regular basis.
  • Watermelon – Contains as much iron as spinach!
  • Berries – blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, cherries are all packed full of antioxidants. These are important while you’re cleansing because of the release of toxins moving through the system looking for a way out.
  • Citrus – Very detoxifying. You can squeeze lemon into water every day, drink a glass of fresh grapefruit juice or have diluted, fresh orange juice. Keep in mind these fruits are acidic and you should be careful when eating them. If you are cleansing, many old toxins are dislodged, such as a virus. These must go through the system before they move out, so citrus may aggravate some symptoms of a virus at first. And don’t let the acid scare you – this acid is an organic element which adds to the nutrient content. For example ascorbic acid (vitamin C).
  • Bananas – High in potassium which is good for a regular heartbeat, especially if you consume too much sodium. But be careful, they are starchy and eating more than 1 per day could make it difficult to lose weight or even gain weight!
  • Pomegranate – The juice has the highest antioxidant count of all fruits. Along with cherry juice, it has been shown to help clear plaque from the arteries.
  • Avocados – This fruit has many vitamins and minerals and is mostly known for being high in the essential fats. These are important for skin silkiness and glow, shiny, strong hair and weight loss among other things.
